Your kids or grandkids might be able to use it, or you depending on how old you were when you planted them. It's a fairly slow growing tree and there's a thick layer of sapwood which means that you won't get much timber until they're at least 400 -500 mm diameter.

Not sure about slow growing, I have one in my yard that has grown from a sapling less than 1m tall to ~10m and 200mm dia in 8 years. I was hoping for some decent timber soon, it needs to be cut down due to too much shade in the yard, but sounds like I will only get sap wood

Most of the tropical hardwoods will put on height first then girth later ie very tall skinny trees then as they age along comes girth.

Yes! they've got to race to the canopy. Sometimes if they are planted alone in a garden they will only grow short cos they don't have to fight for light.

As Texx mentioned I have heard it is quite nasty stuff to work, nosebleeds are common.

The timber itself is quite striking though, a polished black bean floor is something to see.

    Cheers.

Hi turnerboy, this box i made from blackbean. Should wear breathing protection, really irritates the sinuses. Finishes exceptionally well.

    Cheers
