Blackening NG Rosewood
Hi All,
My folks house has New Guinea Rosewood for all of its doors/jams/windows, and all of the rosewood which faces outside is turning black?!
Has anyone else experienced this or know the best way to return to normal colour without having to sand back?
Many thanks

Feast Watson have a product called "woodclean" which is supposed to do the job. A few years ago I helped a mate do something similar to what you are looking to do and used an Intergrain product, the name of which eludes me right now.
Hope this helps

Lappy, what was the original finish applied to the timber? In my experience oil-finished timber goes very dark over time, especially when hit with sunlight. If so, sanding may be the only way?

Hi Lappy
You will probably find the house was finished with Linseed Oil, thats what it tends to do, Western Red goes absolutely black in a very short time.
My place here is WRC boards and when we bought, the house was in the same state, tried all the proprietary brand cleaners, such as the one you mentioned, with very little sucess for the outlay. They all contain Oxalic Acid in varying concentrations, but for the price are next to useless.
Following that expensive exercise I used Pool Chlorine diluted 25% water 75% chlorine sprayed on with a garden sprayer, worked in with a scrubbing brush if needed, followed by high pressure cleaner.
The house looked like new and has not needed cleaning again.
Cheers John M
