    Default What is Blockboard?

Whilst viewing Lou's workbench thread I realised that few people are aware of a plywood style product called "blockboard". I stumbled across some at an auction and must say I'm glad I did.

Here is a link where you can see what it actually is http://www.ecocore.com.au/2.1.html

I've used this product and can say that it is lightweight for it's thickness, strong and very stable. Ideal I would say for benchtops and obviously custom sized doors for which it is used extensively.

I've also included a picture of the 44mm variety that I used on my router table.

I got some I guess it to be over 50yrs old, has a nice looking veneer over it to pity its been ruined, someone used it as a chopping board!
I read somewhere that during the depression good wood was scarce so they made block board from low grade stuff and veneered it for wide panels.

It's constructed on the same principle as ply so as far as strength is concerned it would seem to be the same. As far as stability is concerned, I think it is better. It does not want to warp like ply can tend to do.

I can't think of any downsides, which of course does not mean there are no downsides.

    Bob,

The stuff I got was from an auction so I paid very little for it. Otherwise the link above has a phone number. Im sure they could help with pricing.
