Borer holes in cypress
Hi everyone,
I discovered these holes two days ago. This timber was fine only a month ago so it's very recent. The wood is Cypress pine and was felled a good few years ago and is well seasoned. Visual inspection of nearby timbers doesn't show any damage. The holes are about 4mm across.
What I'm keen to find out is what kind of borer it is. I haven't seen an actual insect yet, and I've injected kerosene into the holes so I'm unlikely to see one. There were what appeared to be granular material in some of the holes, but I'm not sure if it was eggs or frass.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Yeah I'm sure it's not lychtid. There are some beetles that apparently cause this sort of damage but I don't know enough about them.

Re: Borer holes in cypress
According to most reading online this is likely to be a jewel beetle.
They can apparently live in the timber for years before emergence so it's possible they were already there. Problem now is that the beetles will have flown out into my workshop filled with timber and may have laid eggs anywhere. Looks like I'm going to have to try a preventative borer treatment on the more susceptible timbers. I've bought some of the rentokil borer treatment for this.
If anyone has anything to add or another opinion please feel free. Hopefully this information proves correct and therefore useful to someone else."That's impossible. Nobody can give more than 100%. By definition that is the most anyone can give"

Re: Borer holes in cypress
As suspected, it appears to have been jewel beetle. Found this one not 1 metre from where the affected timber was.

Cypress pine from say Injune Roma area? How do you get a piece that big without a knot?
Cheers,
"A".

Re: Borer holes in cypress
I'm actually not sure exactly where it was cut from. I've made a coffee table out of another piece from the same pile and it had a few big knots.
