    Default Borers?

I've found a piece of timber in my roof (not structural, it was just to attach a cable to) that is full of tiny holes with lots of dust sitting under it.

I have removed the cables from the timber (I'm an electrician) and have removed the timber from the roof. It's outside at the moment and I plan to cut it up and burn it.

What I'm worried about though is whether or not surrounding pieces of timber may also be affected? Location is Hobart and I'm thinking the damage is being done by borers not termites etc (?). The timber was still quite heavy and too strong to break by hand.

Should I be getting the place fumigated etc? Or just keep an eye on surrounding pieces of timber?

    Yeah, sounds like borers .

To be honest and safe, getting it checked out is always a good idea.

    cheers

Most likely lictus borers - the holes mean you no longer have them. They live and breed in the sapwood only not in the hard wood so they would have arrived when the timber was first used and then departed some time after. Most milling removes sapwood, but some gets through - mostly on edges of the cut boards.

    see http://www.csiro.au/resources/pspr.html

    which says inter alia:

Treatment of lyctid borer is often unnecessary in the southern parts of Australia. This is due to grading rules in sawmilling which restrict the amount of sapwood contained in framing timbers.
Timber over five years old is unlikely to contain these borer as they will have exhausted their food supply.

So from your description it should be OK - but if you are in doubt you need to get an inspection done.

I'm with bloss they're not much of a problem until u grab a rafter and it turns to dust. he's right they'll be gone by now and they do only eat sap wood it's termites that you have to worry about. the lyctid borer or powder post bettle leaves the saw dust you can see .if you are worried about it there are chemicals you can spray on them but i wouldn't do it because they're not that dangerous to the house
