Botanical gardens of natives
In our travels we've been stopping off at botanical gardens to help id in the flesh the woods I've worked with. Here are some notes; pls feel free to add your own sites.
Peter Francis Points Arboretum, Coleraine, VIC
Claims to have 500 species of Eu's; also other species inc some spectacular hakeas. Established in the 60s on the site of an old quarry and dump, it has mature specimens. Visit during Spring flowering to get the best out of it.
Website includes photos of species.
Powell Gardens, Quorn SA
Oldest plantings 1983; well labelled, specialising in semi-arid species.
Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, near Broken Hill
Well labelled and set up; semi-arid species
More info
Broken Hill Botanical Gardens
Right in town, has some healthy mature specimens of dry land species; labelling not very thorough.
Alice Springs Desert Park
Semi-arid species; some plantings too young to be of use to id mature specimens. (Also has excellent bird houses and 2x weekly a riveting raptor show).
Arid Region Botanical Gardens, Port Augusta SA
Lots there, labelling could be more thorough.
Website includes drawings, descriptions and distribution maps of speciesCheers, Ern
