Default Anyone bought decking from auctions or ebay?? Quality??

    Evening all,

I'm looking at buying timber for a deck + outdoor furniture. Australian hardwood. I've noticed that there are a few auction type sites - ebay, renovator auctions etc. The timber price appears to be around half of the standard price (typical prices around $2-$3/lineal m compared to $4 - $6 from a timber place. Anyone bought a pack from these places? I don't want to end up with a pack of 2nd grade heavily warped timber.

I'm based in sydney if anyone has any handy hints for a good cheap decking timber place. I probably need a couple of hundred lineal metres.

    Cheers,

    Tom

I bought a pack of A grade merbau from a live auction a while ago. I paid about 3.20/lm after all costs. It was as good as you get from anywhere, but I gave it a good look over before I bid. The pack had a lot of shorts, an nothing longer than about 4.8m. The retail at the time was $3.80+, so the saving was not that great, but suited me at the time.
I have seen a lot of 'B' grade, but have never tried it (probably wouldn't).
Things to watch for would be lengths (lots of shorts, etc), water damage, badly bowed or twisted, grade of timber (ie select, standard etc), also, don't forget to allow for delivery and handling. I have seen a lot of aussie h/w's, but never tried it, so can't comment on that.
    good luck,
    TM
