Brigalow Burl - pen & bowl
Some of you may have see the Brigalow Burl Pen that Gabriel turned. I posted pics of it yesterday on Gabs "April Challenge" post. Thought you may enjoy seeing more pics of it, in the rough and as 2 small turned items.
This burl is quite beautiful in my opinion and I've only had it once, as small burls with holes and bark inclusions . Some was cut for small items, a pen & a small bowl ... Here are a few pics

Above and below: Brigalow Burl Bowl about 10 cm diam. Excuse the quality in parts as it was turned by a 92 yo friend from Bendigo
It was a far from perfect piece to work with, with cracks holes and bark and resin pockets. But the wood showed many beautiful attributes with golden areas in the heartwood as may be see here

Hope you enjoy looking at these

Nice stuff, Brigalow, it works very easily for a dense wood & makes good tool handles, I've found. I've only ever seen straight-grained stuff before, that's the first I've seen with any figure...

Like most Acacias, the burl is pretty rare, lovely stuff to find

Neil, I'd not really thought about it, but now you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen any sort of Acacia with a burl on it, ever, & I've looked at one or two. Interesting to ponder why - are they just more resistant to the stimuli, be it insect secretions, viruses, or whatever actually induces what is essentially a wooden cancer on a tree? Some species like our local blue-gums seem to be highly susceptible to burl formation - maybe it's solar radiation....
Cheers,IW

The nicest Acacia burl I have as a turned item is from Pink Gidgee (Acacia crombiei) found and turned some 20+ yrs ago by a IWCS member.
This is one piece I really treasure as a gift from this friend who I both admire and have learnt so much from.
Maybe I should post a pic of it ? But I don't wish to start a stampede!
