Default Bringing timber from NZ to Oz

Has anyone either brought back with them (as luggage) or sent home timber from New Zealand to Australia? I will only be wanting a small lot for a box and some carving blanks.
    What are the customs regulations?
    Thanks

I did back in '97, declared it on the way thru & they inspected it & said it was fine, they were more interested in spaying my boots 'cos we had been walking in the bush.

Coming into NZ - I guess Aussie is the same

If it's dry and clean there are usually no problems. They will look closer at anything with bug holes or bark on it. Could have critters living in it and will probably want it fumigated. ($$)

My advice is to contact AQIS directly about this as the situation with New Zealand is changing pretty rapidly. They have sudden oak death and we do not, so the actual conditions depend on what timber it is and where it is from. www.aqis.gov.au is the address and ICON is the database of current import conditions. I would phone the timber coordination group and talk to them about what you want to do and get a verbal from them. There are several new diseases of quarantine concern about at the moment and we need to be pretty responsible to avoid them.

Had a couple of trips over to NZ and have brought back Rimu,Totara, Swamp Kauri, just to name a few as long as the timber has been de.barked or processed no worries with the agricultural authorities as long as you declare it and they inspect for insect/bacterial infestation.

Never had any problems with them, any thing that they become suspicious about you can leave it with them for spraying at a fee of course.
