Hi all,

Having just bought a house I have decided that I have space and incentive enough to start fiddling with wood for the first time since highschool (makes you start feeling old when school was last century). I have however now run into the question of where to source decent timber. I've noted that bunnings has "tassie oak" relatively cheap and I can get 90x19 boards for around the 6.50/m mark, but other than pine that's also all they have (most of their wood is also boed enough that I could string it up and go hunting with it). Quotes for vic ash from a couple of lumber yards come out at $11/m as the cheapest, nearly double bunnings price and the cheapest quote for jarrah came back at over $15/m for 90x19 dressed boards (and here I was thinking the tools would be the expensive bit). Those quotes were admittadly for smaller quantities rather than cubic meters so I don't know how much I could knock that down by ordering a couple hundred meters.

So this leads to the question of what sort of prices should I be considering good for these timbers (jarrah, messmate and vic ash been the three main woods I've been looking at).
Also what is the difference in regards to flooring/decking timber, is there any reason that flooring isn't perfectly fine to use as furniture timber as I have also been looking at places like narangba timbers. It generally seems that flooring timber is half the price of stuff cut and dressed from lumber yards with the downside being having to laminate multiple pieces together if I need anything thicker than 19mm.
