Brush Box
I think this is an old Brush Box
On a recent trip to Cooktown I stopped at the little Annon river for a dip and stumbled upon this gnarly old darling of a tree
A truly wonderful example with the most interesting form...shaped by floods and other elements over many years
If it isn't a Brush Box has anyone any idea what species it is
Here's some pics to enjoy

I enlarged the flower pic as much as I could but it's pretty blurry. I thinkI can see the characteristic 'staminal fasicles" of a Tristania (now Lophostemon) flower, so you're in the ball-park. Did the flower look like this?
There are a couple of other species in the same genus that occur in the general area, but I don't know how easy they are to tell apart, nor what the exact distribution of each species is. Brush box generally likes half-decent soils, not dry river beds so I suspect it may be another member of the genus, but it might also be one that just chose a bad spot to germinate in..
Cheers,IW

Not certain what the flowers looked like Ian.
The girth was well over 1000mm suggesting it was an aged tree
Incidentally there is a Brush Box growing in my backyard at Mt Garnet
The soil here is skeletal at best but appears healthy enough
Have witnessed some magnificent examples growing at Cunningham's Gap National Park...the soil there being much richer and greater depth
They can grow to huge proportions given the right conditions
Some exhibit massive bulbous butts and look truly prehistoric
A sight to behold especially in a sub tropical rainforest setting
