Question Is this a good buy

Was in the mite 10 today, and saw some redgum slabs approx. 1500x300x50 for $23 ea. Was thinking I might get some to make a new workbench out of including the top.

For the top I was thinking of cutting them into 50x50 and dowling and laminating them together.

Now these were pretty rough and I am not sure of the moisture content at the moment, how ever I plan to mill them up properly etc.

Do you think this is a good deal or will I be wasting my hard earned?

    thanks in advance,

    Jason.

Personally value is if you are happy with the price but my calculations indicate that is about $1022 cubic metre, which seems pretty good to me but I also dont know "normal" prices for redgum.

Good luck and standby for me to be corrected.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

If you're in the city, thats a great price. Certainly in Sydney, decent, interesting timber is hard to come by, unless you're King Midas. Our colleagues in the bush have it much better.

Seems a shame to use it for a bench top tho, unless its to be one of these exhition benches. I'd use recycled bearers or joists and save the redgum for a bit of furniture.

    Hi Jason,

these sound like the things they use in garden beds etc... this will mean that they are not seasoned enough for furniture use, I'd buy a few and stack them to dry for a year or so (speaking from experience). I'm not trying to put you off as I think red gum is one of the nicer timbers in Aus. and I love useing it.

    Blackers,

That sounds like quite a good price - which M10 store are you referring to?

I recently bought a tad over 20m of 150x50 rough sawn, and the total was just over $200. Nice stuff though, and dried to the point where it's nicely usable.

Could always do with more though, as I have a big(ish) project coming up...
    Cheers!

Should I tell? Then my secret stash may get taken!! Although as mentioned in the last two posts (thanks for the words of wisdom Auld Bassoon and Echnidna) may have to buy some and season them. Maybe could make SWMBO some birthday presents in a couple of years.

But (windge like a little kid) I want my new workbench now.

    Jason.

p.s. the M10 is at Hastings.
