Where to buy Oak - Sydney
Hello, can somebody tell me whether I can get oak in 30mm thickness at either Bunnings or Masters? I have seen some lengths at Bunnings in the past but not to the thickness I require. Alternatively any other dark hardwood will do, it doesn't need to be oak specifically.

Oak
Mal up here at Boutique Timbers has some oak, natural edge at 40mm and 50mm RS.
I am coming back to Sydney next Tuesday and could bring some back.
What lengths and widths do you need?
Don't understand you colour requirment? Oak is light, similar to pine in colour and you specify dark hardwood?
grey gum, blue gum, jarrah, reg gum, iron bark... whatever.... darkest would be jarrah
I can deliver to Cremorne and you can collect if you are interested
Thanks and Regards
Greg

My mistake, I'm new to woodworking, so I must be thinking of the merbau(?) at Bunnings, alongside the oak, which was a bit darker.
I'm planning on building a few end grain butchers blocks, and already have some hardwood I can recycle, it's of a similar colour to pine - maybe it is oak, but I'll ask some of the old hands at the workshop if they can ID it for me. So what I need is a darker hardwood to provide a visual contrast, I'm not fussed on what variety it is.
Cheers for the kind offer, Greg. I'll see what I can find at Masters in the morning, and if I need something from Boutique, I'll let you know well before y0ur departure, and pre=organise it with them.

If you buy from Greg you know the timber will be untreated which is important for food safety reasons.
Bunnings and Masters, unless they can provide you with a certificate saying there timber hasn't been chemically treated in any way I wouldn't eat off it!

Are you talking about OAK or Tassie Oak.
Tassie Oak is a light coloured timber of varying species from Victoria and other places - not really an Oak.
I would be really amazed if Bunnings had any OAK, also a light coloured timber, mostly from Europe.
There are quite a few oaks from different parts of the world- I have never seen any at Bunnings other than Tassie Oak mouldings.
I think Trend Timbers may stock American white and red oak or as Greg has already said, Boutique Timbers would be the place to start____________________________________________________________
there are only 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary arithmetic and those that don't.

I wondered if you were thinking of red oak that is sold in Masters. I think it is sourced from the US.
Cheers,
Jim

Bunnings + Oak must equal Tassie Oak (a thoroughly aggravating non-specific name if ever there was one ).
