Where to buy red cedar in Northern NSW
I'm wanting to buy some red cedar boards. There used to be a couple of timber mills just south of the Queensland border, Billinudgel, Mullumbimby or similar that kept odds and ends in stock. But I can't remember exactly where. I think one of them might have been at the Brisbane Working with Wood show this year. Does anyone have an idea of what the location or name of the mill might have been?
Cheers,

I suggest you try Billinudgle Woodworks .........
http://billinudgelwoodworks.com.au/timbersales.html
He's been at the Brisbane Timber & Working With Wood Show plenty of times, so it may have been him that you saw there. He has lots of timber in his shop in town, but I believe he also has a yard somewhere with more stock. Best to ring him first.....
There's also Cedar Works down near Grafton who may have what you're looking for. http://cedarworks.com.au/index.htm

What are you specifically after?
I am home probably next week and have a few slabs (see https://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/milling-macadamia-farm-169950) stored and should be dry already.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Try the 'timber slab factory' in mullumbimby. I buy cedar from them often.

Thanks for the feedback.
Dai Sensei, at the moment I'm after enough to make a sewing box, a foolish promise, but while I'm at it I'd like to get enough for some other projects like trim on a canoe I'm building. It's a beautiful timber and not always easy to find, especially at a reasonable price.
Billinudgel was on my list to visit but I was getting worried because their web page account has been suspended, I found them again on Facebook though.
Ulmarra is too far south this time around but will definitely check it out next time I drive down to Sydney.
Cheers

I will PM you my details, you are welcome to call in and have a look, even just for a cuppa and yak. I only have Aus Red Cedar, so if you are after something for a boat I wouldn't advise it, you should be looking for Western Red Cedar.
You may also be interested in Greg Ward's auction coming up (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f12/boutique-timbers-cedarworks-timber-auction-sunday-21-sept-14-a-187351), yes a fair way, but you can make a weekend of it and his auctions are usually worth while. Just take a trailer as you will not be able to resist buying more than you need

Aus red would be fine for trim on a boat, as long as you weren't fanatical about weight. It's not that heavy, and trim isn't large chunks. I've framed my entire boat with Surian (frames, stringers, transom, sheer clamps and gunwales) which is basically the same stuff, and the whole boat only weighs a bit over 60 pounds.

Red Cedar Timgber
I grow and sell some Red Cedar from my farm near Gympie which is not too far north of Brisbane. If you are interested, give me call on 0754866147. I have some smaller pieces, a couple of slabs, and a few trees and logs that need to be cut and sawn. I also have some give aways as well. Bob

The trim is for the decks at either end of a canoe and a few bits inside, it'll be well sealed, and isn't structural so that should be fine. It just looks so good polished up. Between the Timber Slab Factory and Billinudgel Woodworks I picked up enough pieces for my current project but want some larger pieces. The furniture at the Timber Slab Factory made the visit worthwhile. Bob, I'll be up Gympie way sometime after the middle of October, if it's OK I'll call then and see if you are around?

Aussie red cedar is fine for structural stuff, as long as it's sized appropiately for the loads, and has pretty good resistance to rot. It has been used for boatbuilding almost since it was discovered. Don't worry about it.
