Buying jarrah From WA
Some time ago a group of us in Sydney brought some Jarrah offcuts from WA over to NSW. I have been thinking about getting some dressed timber over in the same manner but the timber would be a maximum length of ONE metre. This length is brought about by the fact that it would be transported by Australia Post within the mail network. Is anyone interested in this idea? Don't ask me prices as I don't know yet, this is just asking for EOI on your part with no commitment from you or me. Rest assured it will be a lot cheaper than buying it in a timber yard. The maximum weight we can ship in one container is 500kg and I have no idea how much timber will be in that limit. I will do all the arranging and distribution would be by pick-up at my place, Helensburgh so you must be in a position to do that. We could bring any number of cages across if the numbers were there. Replies to this thread and confirm by PM and INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS in the PM. Maybe we can even lean on Dave at Perth Woodworking school for another cage of offcuts but that will have to be seen.

Mini,
"A lot cheaper then a timber yard..."
Once you add the freight i think that you'll find the timber yard is a good deal.
unless the timber "offcuts" are free that is.
500kg of Jarrah is about a 0.5m3 which will cost you around $2000 for long wide clear lengths.
the same offcuts bought on the east coast will run about $1000 for <1m long peices.
Will be interested to see what prices you can drum up.Steven Thomas

Freight by normal means is a killer, doing it by the method we have used before and will use again is very cheap although back loading out of Perth is fairly cheap anyway as there is none usually and the trucks are empty as a rule coming back to Adelaide. I work for AP and having done this before and I know exactly what the freight costs are. If there is enough interest I will chase prices on the timber, the freight is known. I have a project coming up I could use some in and am wondering if anyone has an interest in being involved to use the rest. Whether I bring 100 kg or 500 kg over it is the same price so it may as well be 500 kg. There is no time limit as this is repeatable at any time. BTW anyone can do this, it is not a special deal for me. AP will do this for anyone who wants it, the cost is a standard cost up to 500 kg per cage and is dirt cheap. You can put anything that fits in the cage and it is done purely on weight. You may be right though as I have not costed the timber and do not know if it is viable. I will try and do that this week but things are a bit busy so the week after may be more realistic.
