    Default Stump for Anvil

    Hello All,

Does anyone know where to acquire a stump suitable for an anvil stand?
What are the best woods in Oz suitable for this task?

    Thanks

I'd call a tree lopper and give him the approx dimensions.
    Most Eucalypts should be OK.

Ask your local tree loppers to save you one. You may have to go and collect onsite.

Any gumtree will do the job suitably.

Measure your anvil diagonally across the feet then add a few inches and that is the diameter you should be looking for. The extra inches allow for the tree not being true round. Trim sides with a chainsaw if needed. Measure the height of your anvil then standing up straight get someone to measure from your closed fist to the floor. Subtract the heigh of the anvil from your knuckle height and that is the height of the stump you want. Again get a slightly long stump so you have some meat to square it up both ends.

Alternatively you can join a whole lot of 2x4s etc into a DIY square stump.

Around my part of the world the tree loppers are hand in hand with the landscapers who sell 'mulch' so all the tree parts go straight into the shredder

You can just go to a 'real' timber yard and pick up a few 2x12 (45x290mm) planks of hardwood - for this purpose you don't even need Kiln dried, just run of the mill 'wet' hardwood. And a couple of meters of 1/2" (12mm) all-thread rod, a dozen nuts and washers to suit.

Calculate the height of the 'stump' you need - measure knuckles to ground and subtract the height of the anvil. Cut the 2x12's into 'stump' lengths and stack them up until you have a stack that is higher than the anvil base is long. Drill 4 slightly over sized holes through the stack - mark one slab first, drill, then use that as a template to drill the other holes - then make the all-thread into 4 really long bolts - it helps to weld one nut onto the end unless you are an octopus with several wrench sets. If you are worried about the whole thing tipping over in use you can make one or two of the slabs shorter and fit some 2x4's cross ways at the base as outriggers for stability. Place anvil on top and chain it down to the 'stump'.

I've recently made one of these with a friend for his shop and it works OK, now I should make a couple for my anvils since the termites have eaten the old stumps/
