buying timber from Australian Furniture Timber in Port Melbourne

Hey guys

As a newbie to wood working, and living on the West side of Melbourne, I have struggled to find a timber supplier that I like. Mostly I find they point to a stack of timber and say 'go find stuff over there', and when I lug back a bit they seem to make up a price on the spot as to what they will charge me. I don't really blame them, I'm just a hobbiest and there is little chance of making a big sale (my wife still won't let me demolish the house and reconstruct it entirely out of timber so I can have fun on my new table saw). Today I went to Australian Furniture Timber in Port Melbourne, where they have a lot of new and used timbers. I went to buy some wood to make some cutting boards, so not exactly a huge sale. The guys were so helpful, had heaps of different types of wood, got into the challenge of finding contrasting wood with a tight grain (my knowledge of timber extends as far as stuff that looks like pine, and stuff that doesn't look like pine. I get it wrong 50% of the time.), they pulled samples out of everywhere and then walked me around the yard. Not only that, they offered for me to take what I needed from bigger bits: i.e. if I only wanted 1m they would cut down a piece to length at no extra charge. And their prices were quite cheap compared to what I have seen before.

So yeah, I was pretty blown away. I certainly know where I will be buying from again.

... They're standup guys. I've only been in there once, and didn't even really have an idea what I was looking for, let alone a cutlist! I had a vague idea of making some chopping boards, and they sat down and marked a heap of suitable and contrasting timbers down on their list, and I wasn't even purchasing anything at the time! Somewhat shamefully, I haven't been back to get the timber yet, but am trying to find some way of justifying buying a whole heap more

Likewise - I have been trying to work out where to get some quality timber. The Big green Shed wasn't cutting it

I went there last Tuesday and got some absolutely great African rosewood and some Grey elm. I have been going to Australia furniture timbers for over twenty years and cannot speak highly enough about them just good old customer fashioned service

I too live in the west and have also had a great experience with these guys - they had a huge range the day I went out there and a drove away with a carload - literally!. However, tried to revisit a couple of months back and to my horror they appeared to have either relocated or shutdown. The gates were locked and yard was totally empty! I was extremely disappointed to say the least. Their website is still active though with the same address/ number, which I rang with no answer. Can anyone shed any light on their current status/ location?

They shut down a few months ago unfortunately .... there was a thread about the auction they had to sell off the stock.
