Default Buying wood online incl home delivery (Melbourne)?

I'm attempting to revive an old passion for woodworking, I'm looking at making a few simple things at first like a couple of coffee tables, some storage trunks, and a few guitar speaker boxes, that sort of basic thing. My problem is I don't have a car lol! I did a Bunnings & a Masters run on public transport a month or so ago, and that was a pain in the ! Surely in this day & age I can order what I need online & have it delivered to my front door at some minimal cost? Surely? No? I'd like to get something like a couple sheets of 15-16mm pine ply, say 2400x1200 - something reasonable quality & void-free if possible. I should say I am on a budget lol (pensioner). Also some solid pine panels... Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in Port Phillip area if that helps. It's a real pity that Port Melbourne place closed down! Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions!

I'm sure you can although I dont know of any to put you on to, someone here may help too if they're local.

Have you considered looking on gumtree for man/ute hire or using airtasker, hipages or service seeking to find someone with an appropriate vehicle to pick you and your stuff up at an arranged time from bunnings/masters and drive you home ? That way you only pay one way and can choose your own items.
As I understand it Airtasker in particular is just regular people selling skills/services they can provide ie a ute hire, to make a bit of extra cash.

    Just a quick note
I think Bunnings charge about $60 for a ute load.
Tho if they deem it to long they charge $100 for it to be delivered on flat bed truck.
We use this service quite a bit for our company.
I'm not sure on masters delivery prices.
Tho they have some better timber some times.

It depends on what you want. If you're after second hand stuff, you could try buying a house lot from a wrecker. If you want quality new timber, Brittons are good. Sensible prices, though Dande to Port Phillip could be a tad expensive. If you buy what you want for a couple of different projects, that may be a good way of at least soothing the pain of delivery costs.

    Regards,

    Rob

Thanks for the advice! I didn't think of looking at airtasker, that's a good idea. Also I had no idea Bunnings offer a delivery service? For $60 though, I'm better off waiting a bit & buying a whole stack at once I reckon. Thanks again.

if you search online you will find ply suppliers in Melbourne that will deliver. You will find a great variety of ply that can be cut to size if you wish.

I am sorry to say that transporting panels can be a pain, unless you have a suitable vehicle.
I have a station wagon with roof bars, and full panels (2.4 x 1.2 m) of 15mm thick are hard enough to get on the roof by ones self. I also need to remember that they have a load limit. Six months ago I had a handyman job where I needed two dozen sheets of 6mm MDF. After getting a couple of prices for delivery, $50 -$120, I decided to hire a ute which cost me under $100 but gave me full control from taking off the shelf to delivery - and I did not need to hang around all day waiting for materials to arrive on site.

If you have an idea of what your finished size is, or a reduced size, that is easier to carry it would be easier, perhaps a neighbor could help.
Not sure exactly where in Port Phillip you are, but most hardware store would probably be able to deliver for you, but at a price.
