Californian Redwood - Sequoia Tree Removal
Hi All,
I thought I'd ask the question in this forum in the hope that someone may be able to give me some advice/direction...
I have a MASSIVE sequoia (Californian Redwood) on my property in Belgrave which has chosen to start dropping limbs. These limbs are the size of small trees themselves and cause considerable damage when they fall.
In the period of a week (Christmas Eve to New Years Day) the tree has shed 6 large branches, twice taking out the neighbours phone line, their power line once and my decking handrails and balustrade stainless steel wires.
Unfortunately it is time to source options of what to do...
I love the tree, but it is big, too big and is now extremely unpredictable as to when it may drop a branch. I'm petrified it's going to drop one and end up killing someone.
Does anyone know why it may suddenly be dropping limbs, how to possibly rectify it or alternatively... know of a saw miller that may be interested in removing the tree and keeping the timber. I understand the timber is highly sort after and I am happy for the tree feller/sawmiller to use the timber for whatever they wish.
Have attached a pic to give you an idea of the girth of the tree. It dwarfs my 4WD
Hopefully someone is able to assist me. Many thanks in advance
David

It could be water table or temperature related - nothing much you can do about it unfortunately.

Have a talk with Graeme McMahon, he'll know what to do with it.

What the others have said. Have you checked with council to ensure you are allowed to drop it?

I'm definitely interested...
Hi David
I would be definitely interested in solving your little problem. Salvaging and milling large trees is what we have been doing for a long time now, as you can see in a few posts in the Small Timber forum over the past few years. We can handle trees in the 8 foot plus diameter range, and have milled a few in the 20 tonne range, and will find the gear to lift them. We generally do it for the timber, as long as the machinery costs are not to high and the timber is worth it. I assume you are located in Belgrave, Melbourne. Please give me a call on 0417845224 to discuss.
Cheers
James

Do keep us updated on what eventually happens to the tree.

Wow!!!
Having stood in awe at the base of some of these on a trip to California, all I can say is, that is some tree.
I think you will have some spectators when that baby comes down. In truth, I wouldn't mind being one of them.
As has been said, PLEASE keep us posted.

There you go - sell tickets to watch it come down to recover some of the cost!
