Camphor Laurel
Driving up to Qld in 2 weeks and have been told to look at getting some Camphor Laurel. Will be in the Surfers Paradise area. Can anyone point me towards any mills within a couple of hours drive from there. Also can anyone tell me if burls are common in this wood as I mainly carve bowls (stop the assumption I dont own a lathe ) and am looking to diversify from the normal eucalypt I work with.

Hi Rowan,
If you don't want to drive to Mullumbimby try Shaw's Timber at Tumbulgum' about 20k's south of Tweed Heads. Don't have any details, he used to advertise in the Australian Woodworker. You can get a great counter lunch at the Tumbulgum Hotel.
Cheers

In the Bris. Courier Mail - Weekend Shopper, someone is selling Camphor Laurel slabs which sound cheap. Quote:
Camphor Laurel slabs 6 pieces, 1m-2m long, outer trunk cuts. $50 Ph. 07 3889 2676 Petrie
This may be a bit far (Petrie is on the far north side of Brisbane) and may not be suitable for bowls but someone else might be interested.Wayne
