    Default Big Camphor Laurel Burl

Anyone who knows Grafton NSW will probably recognise this big beast just near the court house Whilst I was at Grafton on route to Coffs Harbour with Gawdelpus John I thought i would show him one of my favourite burls. I have been watching it for over 10 years myself, but Stan (from Billinudgel) who we also called in to on way back, says he has been watching it for a lot longer. I was waiting for a decent lazer cutter, he says he's been thinking about a cross-saw. Wonder how many would notice it gone

Awesome How old is the tree itself, do you know?

Probably wouldn't be able to squeeze that into your back pocket and walk off with it too easily I think!

Legend has it that the best coloured Camphor comes from around Grafton, so that burl might be something really special.

Not sure of age, but at a guess I'd say around 80-100, there are a few big ones at Nabiac showgrounds of similar size and that's how old they are. I was thinking of backing up a big ute and just let it fall in after cutting

I think it's a danger to the communityand needs removal ,health and safety need to be called in and ,department of cancerous growths should also have a say,it might infect the entire population of Camphor trees in the community ,a sort of Camphor cancer To save the council money and prevent future outbreaks you could offer for a small consideration to remove the diseased section for them and dispose of it safely : cheers ~ John

    Default Camphor Burl

Wow, nice burl, but I have never seen a burl on Camphor before.
I have had my eye on some trees which are riddled with burl, more burl than tree. I wrote a letter to the council and asked if I could remove them, They said no, but I have had success on other occasions, especially if you are a qualified chainsaw operator
    Food for thought!

If you remove the burl would the tree be able to survive?

Yes, provided the wound is sealed properly to avoid infection

Whilst I'm not wanting to start or get involved in a debate, this is debatable.

I've seen trees affected both ways, size and location of burl on tree plus tree size and tree type can affect outcome of whether the tree lives or survives.
    Cheers

    Default big Camphor Laurel Burl

It's camphor laurel. those trees are notoriously had to kill. my neighbor has been poisoning his now for 5 years.
they loose their leaves and then start growing again. every camphor we have cut down starts growing again if not painted with glyphosate immediately.
and even then they sometimes grow from the roots away from the trunk.
camphor is very hard to kill.
we have an infestation of it here in nobbys creek. it's slow work getting rid of them.
    cheers Lillian
