Camphor Laurel slabs
Hi,
I have couple of large camphor laurels in the back yard that I am cutting down in a few days. I am thinking of milling the trunks into slabs (Dia 900 Len 3000). I am still in two minds as to is it worth the effort or should I just turn it all into wood chips.
The cost of milling is set to $450/m3 and I am not sure if there is a market for slabs in the Sydney area.
I am not after making money out of it. I just think it would be a waste if it all ends up at the tip.
If I am to proceed with milling what I should pay attention to.
I am sure there are people following this forum who can offer advice. Thanks in advance.

Well Mapleman in Queensland has some experience here - he's sold lots of it recently.

Hey Mate,
From personal experience I know that you can often fetch around $900 a cubic meter for green camphor on gumtree if you're willing to sticker it and wait for the sales. Someone I know recently sold less than a cube of semi seasoned slabs, nothing huge or highly figured, for around $2000 a cube.
I know you said you're not in it to make money but if it paid for a dinner with the misses, lets you meet new people in the wood working community, I'm sure it would be win-win all round.
I'd say do it, nothing to loose really. Can always sell it to breadboard makers.

I doubt it would be a huge financial windfall if that is what you are after, but the timber is worth saving, if not slabs then as turning blanks.

Well let me put it this way; I milled some timber from a tree (another camphor laurel) I felled last weekend and it was way smaller. However, I did do it myself on my regular bandsaw so there was no money involved.
On the plus side, my sinuses are astonishingly clear!

Lively discussion. Thanks to all respondents for making the effort.
Some of it is encouraging but average is on a cautious side.
I am likely to proceed and take a risk. Will report the result of milling in a week or so.
I noticed though that most of you are Qld based. I am wandering if there is any interest in Sydney area.

There would definitely be interest in Sydney. Including myself, just likely not for an entire tree of slabs, but a couple.
Where are you based in Sydney?

The location is Killara and I am opened to any proposals.
The trees are coming down tomorrow and milling will be some time next week.
You are welcome to participate.

I'm on the northern beaches, so that's pretty convenient. Busy during the week unfortunately, but definitely post some photos and let us know how you go

And here are some of the the results. It was a hard work though and I questioned my decision many times. But in the end I think it was worth it. They are all 3m long and between 70 and 90cm wide. If you are interested hurry before all are gone.

I have no idea what to do with green timber so not in the market, but those are some beautiful slabs I'd love to work with.
