Where to get Camphor laurel in WA?
Hi Folks,
I picked up a chisel and decided to start carving for the first time about 6 months ago and guess what, I'm hooked. I have read that Camphor Laurel is a pretty good wood for carving, just can't find any in WA, tried Carbatec and a couple of other places but no luck.
Does anyone know where I could try.
Cheers
Rob

Hello Rob
Camphor Laurel is also highly prized by the WA woodturning fraternity. Luckily, I have a mate who has a friend, who also has a partner, who is a tree lopper. He knows we want CL and when he gets a tree, he lets us know. We get one or two a year.
Can I suggest you join a carving guild. This is where word of mouth really helps when you gather a group of like minded individuals.
Also, talk to you local tree lopper.
Do you have a chainsaw?
Cheers
Willy

Hi Willy, Thanks for the advice, I went to carbatec for some glue yesterday and the gentleman there said Camphor Laurel is very hard to get and they only get it if they find someone cutting a tree down. I thought about the carvers guild but I have a few disabilities these days and don't get around that well. I appreciate your advice..
Hi, Rod, I have tried carving some cedar and it was probably the best I've tried so far, so I might have to stick with that. I've got some jarrah in my shed but haven't tried to carve it yet, not sure what its like to carve. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Comgreserv.
I'm really just after any size, would love a log to carve but will take anything.
Excuse my ignorance but what is a Lucas??
Cheers

Let me answer what a 'Lucas' is?
A Lucas Mill is a portable machine envied by many, and owned by a few.
They are a green machine invented and manufactured in Victoria. They are a swing mill which can also accept a chainsaw bar for the milling of slabs.
