    Default Camphor or Silky Oak? How do I dry it?

    Hi everyone,

    A while ago a neighbour said he had a Silky Oak log and a Camphor Laurel log, and he will drop them over.

    This afternoon I came home to find this log out the back. Is this the Silky or Camphor?

    Secondly, whats the best way to seal it, and how long do I dry it for? Its 400mm in diameter, and 1300mm long.

    I would probably use it for turning. Am I right in saying that the way to cut it for turning is to cut it length-ways into slabs, then cut the blanks from that? (Eg:, cut lots of round blanks from the slabs?).

    Thanks for your help, this will be the first time I have made anything not from DAR from Bunnings!

    I would say that's silky, looks like it been down for a while.

    Cut it into 2 down the heart or slab it, if you're after thinner blanks.

    Can seal the endgrain with Mobilcer, wax or even leftover paint

    i'd say its silky oak sohow us the end grain to be sure.

    the smaller dimentions the better.

    I have lots of box-sized pieces of silky oak if you need them when you come to make something......hey wait a minute, just remembered, also some short logs that have been split and sealed.
