Default central victorian higlands blackwood for sale

I started this thread in another place and have taken the advice offered to try again here.
I am in contact with a farmer in strathbogie who has a stock a blackwood which has been air drying for 8 years. He has made a few attempts to sell it and is keener now as an old European oak has recently fallen and he wishes to have that slabbed also but space is becoming an issue.
The blackwood is typically less than 2 metres in length 30mm deep and varying widths up to 180mm with some deeper pieces.

The question I am really trying to solve is what to pay for blackwood in a situation where the sizes are variable, the lengths are variable but mostly under 2 metres, I have to drive to strathbogie to pick it up and I don't know what I am going to use it for.
I am not planning to buy it all as I have no real need for the very large trailer load that is available but if there are others interested I could bring back more than I need.

The timber has been professionally cut and stored and a small quantity was used for a bar top in a restaurant with good results.

So who wants some and what are you prepared to pay?

Alwyn, I'll buy the lot for $128.35. That's a good offer. (if you're stupid)

Seriously, you'll find it much easier to sell the timber if you follow a few simple steps:

    1. Provide some photos so people get an idea of the condition of the timber.

    2. Provide (as best you can) a list of measurements so we understand the volume.

    3. SET A PRICE!! This is the biggest issue when advertising timber. There are very few sales made when there is no price from the seller.

Sorry for being a smart aleck with my silly offer, but you'll do much better if you take these steps.

I am preparing to buy timber and have no experience in this area except from the retail suppliers in Melbourne - which seem to me to be very expensive. After looking at what few prices were available in a search of this forum and at online suppliers I think around $1750 per cubic metre is a reasonable price. I have not seen this timber yet and consequently have no pictures.
Is there anyone interested in blackwood in lengths under 2 metres widths variable?

Alwin - Armed with an idea on the price you should be paying go up and pick up your share of the timber. While you are there take a ton of photos of timber in question, then post those photos in this thread with the prices you paid.

If it is a good deal, I am sure the members would gladly organize to take the rest of the timber from the farmer. We are nothing but a resourceful bunch.

Here is an opportunity to pick up blackwood in Clifton Hill at less than half retail price. ( less than one third if you consider some of the prices I have seen).
    Please form an orderly queue.

    G'day alwyn,
Once again, some definite measurements and some photos so condition of the pieces can be seen would help prospective buyers.

    Hi Russel,
maybe what you say is true, although pictures of rough sawn timber have never got me very excited. Until I see the timber and plane some down I will not really know.
However I am beginning to get the feeling that there is not a lot of actual interest in BUYING quality timber at rock bottom prices. I will wait a few days to see if there is any interest out there and then plan my trip to the country accordingly. I imagined that with this heat (45C today in Melbourne) all the woodworkers would have left the shed and be propping up the computer near the air-con by now.
    Thanks for you input anyway

Based on my experience here, there is not a lot of interest in buying timber based on one person's word that it IS 'quality timber'. You've had three responses and ALL of them has said "NEED PHOTOS". There's a reason for that.

I've had personal experience with someone who made a huge fuss about their supply of 'aged old-growth tasmanian oak' - and was asking retail prices for it - which turned out to be recycled bed frames, bolt holes and all.

It's not that noone's interested, and it's not that we don't trust you per se (though I get the impression even you haven't seen this timber face to face?) but no one is going to commit to buying someone's stock of "8-year dried" "blackwood" unseen. Taunting us by saying "noone's interested in buying quality timber at rock-bottom prices" is utterly stupid when you haven't even mentioned a price.

Certainly interested in buying quality timber at rock bottom prices in Clifton Hill - but not parting with my cash sight unseen. Once bitten, twice shy.

I am not asking anyone to part with cash at this point - just looking for expressions of interest.
I too have been burnt - mostly from buying rough sawn timber in quality timber yards only to find the problems when dressing the timber. one length of American beech I purchased last year had a large piece of what was once a steel spike embedded in it. This year i purchased a length of European beech, dressed it perfectly - then decided I needed to rip off 40 mm - that piece - once released immediately developed a curve in it of 10mm per metre. How many times have we all purchased timber over 30mm that would not dress to 22mm due to a lazy tooth in the saw or some nasty twist not noticed until too late.

So - if by some amazing luck the timber turns out to be fine - how much would anyone be wanting?

..... it is really too hot to be doing this tonight isn't it.

No offence to you alwyn! but as Juffy and Glenn_M say.
I, like yourself, to have had experience on this forum of members saying they can deliver, but in the long-run cannot or the item is really not suitable or as published.

alwyn dont worry i've tried to sell b'wood in the buy swap and sell and was to honest about the timber. no one turned up to even look at it.pics do help though .As for the 40mm piece you ripped off a board it should curl up because you have changed the tension in the board (sawmilling thing) .if the timber is as good as you say $ 1750 per cube i don't think is excessive given it is good quality

I have ripped plenty of timber and never seen this before. I am assuming it is caused by incorrect drying . Still I do not want to divert this thread into a discussion of anything but the blackwood for the present. See my next post ... I have photos and more detail.

    Alwyn,
As already suggested, people need to know general sizes and specific pricing. Photo's are always good (they tell a 1000 words) and if you really want to get people excited, plane a few pieces and photograph them (put a bit of water on it to bring out the colour). Best of luck with it.

... certainly singing a different tune - but how dare I question.
    Cheers.
