Thread: Chain of Custody ?

Hi John

I have no personal experience of this beyond the never ending Tasmanian news coverage of forestry issues, but I can't help thinking that if any of the timber comes from forests managed by Forestry Tasmania there will be plenty of negative sentiment regarding the idea that it is coming from a sustainably managed forest!

John, I think you have answered your own question. Your reservations are the stumbling point.
At the moment there is a strong push for ethical harvesting but unfortunatly this makes little difference to those carrying out unethical activities. Without careful monitoring, timber will be slipped in under the blanket of the system and the consumer will be none the wiser. I am sure, if the consumer was aware of some of the practices being carried out by some of the so called "reputable" companies in Tassie, they would be horrified.

yep Phil thats correct, pretty much the entire current stockpile at the IST yeard apart from the KB and HP is from recent years old growth logging coupes..as a by product of 'normal' eucalypt harvesting and all old growth or it wouldnt be special timbers..so its curious really and sems more en exercise of FT making up its own standards again...

good words dude thnx.....i have been tot he yard many times at Geevetson and its obvious to anyone thats all the stockpile bar the salvaged oinly coinfers is from old growth coupes...so iwas just wondering if nayone knows what they meant by sustainable..do they plant myrtle seeds after the fires ? and clas sit as STU...?

and yes theres definaltey er [paochers or dodgier operators but FT has become very dominat in recent years and many folks round here have gotten out of the timber business..FT has taken over and if the current forest agrement lockup plans go ahead then poaching will only increase..we need good access to the STU's and an increase to sustain avilablility of genuine special timbers...and it will be much easier for FT to sustain an ethical strangledhold on supply if no one else can access logs..or burls or croth pieces or...

i just winder what i will get if i pay their licence fee ? or if licence holders will be prioritised over non holders in the supply chain..birds eye huon anyone?
