Best (cheapest) way to ship larger amounts of wood from NSW to SA?

Hi Guys.

I figured somebody here would have done it before, so I thought I'd ask.

I wanted to get about a tonne of old beautiful Olive wood from NSW to SA. My stepdad has a stack of it in NSW, and I have a few hundred knife handles to make up, so I wanted to get it here.

Going for a drive isn't an option, I wasn't sure if there was a better option to get it back here. Removalists? Is there a good way to freight them? I can throw them on a pallet easily enough, they aren't long pieces, just heavy.

You're on the right track with palletising your freight, or if not that have it in packs at pallet width and with a flat top so its compatible with palletised freight. If the transport company can forklift it around it makes their life easy, if they can load other stuff beside it /on top with no drama it makes it easy for them to run at capacity.... these things make for good freight and good freight is easy to consign.

What you've got to understand with integrated logistics is that the linehaul from NSW to SA isnt the expensive part... its just another ton of freight on a truck. The expensive part is at either end where a whole truck and driver is diverted to pick up/ deliver your proportion of the load. So if you can nut that out.... arrange to deliver a pallet to a depot and pick one up from a depot... the freight bill gets a whole lot cheaper.

So what you got to work out is how to get your freight to and from a point where it makes like easy for the transport company... on a freight route and with a forklift to load with.... and then arrange delivery to somewhere similar.

In the old days Id have pm'ed you the phone number for a scalper.... the guy who would take a commision to hook you up with a freight company going the right way. But now the scalper is digital... so all care, no responsibility... try a listing with any or all or others like...

I've asked for quotes from Loadshit, hopefully they come back with something not horribly expensive. I'd like to pick up from a depot, but I lack a ute, could potentially borrow a bunnings ute, but that might be more hassle than them just picking it up.
