Cracking Floorboards > Causes?
Hi there,
I am wondering if anyone could help me out, we have a property that is experiencing sever cracking in the floorboards that were laid ~6months ago.
The installer has advised that it appears to be cracking due to moisture, probably due to excessive water being applied to the boards duirng cleaning. Anyone have any ideas? Has anyone experienced anything similar before?
Thank you in advance,

ive seen thid before numerous times, for numerous reasons, steam mops, constant use of air conditioners, not acclimatising the floor prior to laying direct sunlight and other reasons, sorry cant be more help, would be good if you knew the moisture content when it was layed

A few of questions first before I comment
1 Width of boards and thickness (appear to be wide format)
2 If they are wide format, did they have any grooves on the bottom?
3 Secret nailed or floating floor?
4 Appears to be laid over an existing floor, if so, timber (sheet flooring or boards and if boards, orientation of new to old) or slab
5 What preparation was done prior to fixingThe person who never made a mistake never made anything
Cheers
Ray

Get a moisture metre onto it and see what it reads.

just took a closer look at the pics i agree with Rwbuild more info would be helpful, at a guess is it a 5mm vaneer fixed to plywood? Interesting how 2 boards can split in the same spot at a butt join , definately look to be a lot of direct light hitting the floor ,water sun and timber dont mix, the only reason i say a vaneer fixed to ply is that i would have expected some cupping and swelling or shrinkage along the tongue.

i would get a plastic handled spoon and gently tap a couple of the affected areas and see if it sounds hollow compared to the area surrounding it, it maybe that the vaneer is delaminating from the ply?

Hi all, Thanks for the feedback
1 Width of boards and thickness (appear to be wide format)
Around the 150mm/140mm mark
2 If they are wide format, did they have any grooves on the bottom?
Will have to find out
3 Secret nailed or floating floor?
I believe they are floating
4 Appears to be laid over an existing floor, if so, timber (sheet flooring or boards and if boards, orientation of new to old) or slab
Slab
5 What preparation was done prior to fixing
Not too sure, there is a foam underlay,
I wasn't involved in the laying process, so unfortunately im not too much help. Ill try to remove a board and find out further answers.
I beleive this is spotted oak if this helps?
Thanks
