i am being offered some honduran and have noticed a large price difference between the two. i am unsure why there is such a difference. is it because of cuban's rarity or it's properties:confused:

The properties of Cuban are legendary, Honduras less so. There is some Cuban available in very very limited quantities since about 1999 (It may be all gone by now). According to the articles which I have read, Cuban is superior in every way, but Honduran is still very good. You'll know if you ever see a Cuban piece in the flesh-they look remarkably alive.
See you at the auction.

The best mahogany is dark reddish brown and fine-grained. You find it on early European antique furniture (mid 1800s or earlier) and it's often claimed to be Cuban. Inferior mahoganies are more open grained and lighter in colour.

I will have to proxy bid, as it turns out. If its the same auction that I am thinking about, there's a few lots of tempting stuff there.

yeah i had a friend attend for me and she won it. she was the only girl there. all the old boys were coming up and congratulating her on it afterwards.
was pretty exciting but then panic set in as i realised i had to arrange delivery and payment all via remote control while on the road up the coast. all turned out better then ever

I was on a trip myself, and decided not to bid after all. A mate attended and very nearly bought four tonnes of bandsaw for $25.00. He said that he was going to surprise me with it (and the rigger's bill, too)
Apparently an antique tool chest went for $150.00 as well.
I've got a half a cube of Cuban* in Canada waiting for me to get good enough to use it. I figure another 10 years or so. Maybe 20.

congrats again on that timber- I saw the plank after the auction and was glad that I didn't buy it-one more thing to be waiting for my skills to improve
