    Default What size Pine Sleepers?

    Hi,

I am about to do my first CCA treated Pine Sleeper Retaining Wall and would like some advice please.

    For cost reasons I am looking at 3m x 200mm x 50mm Sleepers.

Will this be OK for an earth wall height of 800mm or should I go to the thicker sleepers? One section will be 3m long and the other section will be 2.4m long.

    Paul

at 800 high and 2.4 or 3.0 between supports I would use the 75mm not the 50 however if you go to our sister site at Renovate Forums - Powered by vBulletin you will get a lot more info re landscaping

Yeah, I did 50mm at 3m span but only 400mm high and they bowed a bit, maybe 30mm+. You may try 75mm on the bottom two rows and 50mm on the top two if the budget is real tight.

Timber Queensland produced this Technical Data Sheet a few years ago, but it seems that you have to pay to access it now. It's still available on the Finlayson's site. but I've attached it too.

don't use 50mm sleepers for a 800mm high retaining wall ,it'll end in tears. 75mm would be minimum. a little trick i saw was using empty coke bottles (with lid on) behind the retaining wall to fill the void. batter the earth back, put the wall up,fill with empty plastic containers to 600mm high cover with black plastic and then put your dirt on top of that.and then plant out.
