    Red face Cupping

Hello ... my new spotted gum deck and steps were finished about two weeks ago and although there has been a lot of rain since, the cupping on the timber step was evident from day one (which is when I should have said something).

The timber for the steps was different to the timber used for the deck (different supplier).

As you can see from the attached photos ... we're not talking the end of the world ... what should I do? Take off the cupped pieces, face them the other way and rescrew OR replace altogether?

I am otherwise thrilled with the job.

    thanks for any advice

    Default Crickey!

    G'day jillby,

go around to the supplier and look through the whole stack to find the best sticks that are quarter sawn, grain running across the width of the board. Replace all the cupped ones with them, they should stay flat.

    Talking

Thanks for the quick reply Oddjob1 Any reason why I need to go back to the original supplier (don't know who it is, but I could probably find out)? Or can I just pop up to the local fellow? Are the edges always finished (rounded/routed?) the same way by all manufacturers? Or is that why I should find out who the original supplier was? There is so much colour variation between all the planks that I'm not worried in a "colour variation" sense ... just need to make sure the routing on the edges is consistent.

Your just talking about the 3 boards on the risers aren't you? Might have been a bit green. I'd turn them over.

    regards

    Default Could work!

    Hi guys,

I think turning the facing boards over might work, but if they are back sawn they may just want to do their own thing now. In any case I think any supplier of decking boards will have replacements that if quarter sawn should suffice. It may be interesting to play with the cupped ones by wetting the cupped face and see if they come back flat. But my guess is even with much fixing they will ultimately have their own way.

    Have fun...Oddjob1

Hi Steve ... yep ... just the two risers really ... they look to me like you could turn them to face the other way and if I can get someone who knows what they're doing with a power drill to screw them in for me, I might just get away with it.

Otherwise, I'll do what Oddjob1 said and start over.

Thanks for the quick replies gentlemen.

    Love this forum.

    Jill

(oddjob1 - just saw your latest post ... if I put a screw RIGHT IN THE CORNERS where the bowing is most obvious, will the warp be stronger than the screw?).

    Default It'll crack

    Hi Jillby,

don't bother screwing them at the ends because it will just crack the wood.
You don't want to even try to control wood, you really need to appreciate what the wood wants to do and work with it. Screws and nails are only to hold things in place not to change their character.

    Cheers...Oddjob1

    Default Nearly!

    Hi Jillby,

by Jove you've nearly got it!

The wood is Mother nature and the nails and screws are mankind's attempts to control her.

    Cheers...Oddjob1
