Default Is this really cypress and is it ok to make wooden spoon out of it?

I bought a slab from someone in Gippsland. It was from a fallen tree on a farm. It has a fragrance - I presume it smells like cypress. The cypress I think I see driving around has a more grey bark (see it a lot on the mornington peninsula) whereas this appears a little more brown?

Does this look like cypress? The Cypress ive seen in hardware store looks nothing like this, it often is much darker and way more knots. This has really nice crotch grain, fiddleback and also black dots which look cool is it birds eye?

Anyway, my father took a bit of the offcut and made a couple of wooden spoons - is it food safe?

Yeah that’s Cypress Macrocarpa (Cupressus Macrocarpa), the stuff at Hardware stores etc is a different species, think the other stuff is commonly know as White Cypress, Murray River Cypress or Northern Cypress (Callitris Columellaris)

I see. I was shocked at how pretty this piece of timber was. I see it all the time being sold on Facebook for only $80 for a large slab.

Do you know if it's food safe?
