    Default some days are diamonds

Went for a walk at lunchtime and came accross the site gardener who knows I am a woodworker. Upshot I now have about 3m of 6-12" diameter blackwood in my car.

Next question is, is there a trick to getting turning blanks of blackwood to dry? I have some stuff that is supposed to be dry at home now and it is falling apart in a most distressing manner.

I am seriously considering the microwave method as my current turn rough and place in plastic bag untill things slow down a bit method does not seem to work well with Acacia's.

    Let me know

Hi Pah,we do a lot of b/w turning blanks so as long as you keep the heart out of it and seal the ends there should be no problems at all,we dont have many failures at all as far as drying the turning blanks. All are dried in the shed just rakced criss cros with thin stick between........do not have any heart wood in them or they will crack to bits.

50 Ks, mate I drive further than that one way to work.
We were in Tass this time last year.
    We stayed In Deloirane.
The host of the B&B we stayed at, was amazed that we drove to Hobart and back in one day, even more amazed the next day when we told him we drove to Strahan and back in the day.
We were the first ppl he had heard of to actualy do the Strahan trip in one day.

    Lock up you timber.............

I just did a 150km round trip for a job today, the last 10Km up a dirt track to the top of a mountain, 1st gear low range, towing a trailer full of materials. You're lucky you don't live within striking distance of me Tasman!

    You're all weak,

Tomorrow I drive 100k's to the airport, fly 500 k's, drive 125k's to my site, then come back the same way.... 14 hours, three hours work and 11 hours travelling....... come to think of it that's about twelve times round Tasmania.

A Classic and very subtle de-railment. Frame this one in "this is what can happen when you ask a relatively straightforward question" beautiful stuff, and the question got answered too

Airport...100ks, harden up you guys. Let me tell you TODAY!!...well Meekatharra International Airport is 540 ks up the road over corrugations so deep you can lose a semi-trailer in them. Then I had to fly in a DC3 to Mombasa, trek through the savannah for 47 hours, climb Mt Kilimonjaro where it was minus 18 deg C at the summit and then....

I'd rather get a bit of Blackwood...

    Cheers

    Cliff,
I went up MT Yarrabah and fitted firecheck gyprock to the inside of one of the transmitter huts (shipping container), have to go back and finish it off soon. Only did it because:
    1) a friend asked me (split system ACs being fitted tommorrow and gyprock had to be in - rush job)
    2) the road up there is gated off so it's a rare opportunity to check out some spectacular views
    3) it's not often I get paid to go 4 wheel driving
Otherwise I don't do gyprock (especially not firecheck), and I don't travel very far for jobs.
