English Elms at Bathurst
Old trees, beautiful grain, all being cut as they are 'dangerous' Probably around 20-30 trees are coming down.
Mal from Boutique Timbers contacted the council to seek to purchase a semi load of logs and pay the Coucil good solid Aussie dollars.
....... You know what is coming......
'Sorry, we are going to wood chip them, it's all too hard to sell them,as we'd have to run a competing tender'
'But aren't you claiming you are a green Council and a wonderful recycler?'
'Well we are.... we'll use the wood chips!'
What a waste. What a waste of time. So much for common sense.
I emailed the Mayor and got a standard reply from the 'Engineer'.
Why do we put up with this petty beaurocracy who pay lip service to recycling and destroy beautiful logs up to a metre wide!
If I was there with a carton of beer and a truck with a Hiab.....
But under new guidelines, that also might not work. Workers in fear of their jobs would be fearful of bending rules. What a sorry state of affairs.
Regards
Greg

That really sucks. Even if they have to run a competing tender, how hard can it be?
Deserves a story in the Herald I reckon.

Can you find out who is in the council and hates the mayor.
They'll take up your cause.

That's not an engineer, that's a beaurocrat. A real engineer would say "thanks for the beer, here's a log"

What a bleedin' waste. Fair enough if its some not so rare timber, even an old gum, but elm?! Make some money, auction it, whatever.
Didn't some disease wipe out most of UK's elm forests, so supplies would be limited evn there? Was it Dutch elm disease?? It sounds a pretty hard but useful timber, used in boat building and chair parts. Here are some sites I quickly grabbed, just in case you want to shed a tear for a chance gone begging...

ELM, its grain being tough and curly makes it
not liable to split. If felled between November and
February (Winter) it has no sap. It is used in mast-making for
caps, bibbs, bees, and parts of tops.
Makes me want to weep...Andy Mac

Bathurst Council
OK. Thanks.
I've emailed Channel Seven and even if nothing comes of this, hopefully someone in Bathurst will read this forum note and contact their local paper to raise more fuss.
regards

No more ridiculous than Queenslands vegetation managment laws! Duarainga council have several dead/dying Budgeroo trees in their local park - dangerous to park users right! You would think they would have been happy to accept my offer to remove them free of charge - ha! They claim they have to apply for a permit to remove them and even then, the trees cannot be used for any commercial OR non-commercial purpose (have to rot away or become landfill) and cannot be removed from the shire. What a crock - just the sort of laws you would expect a shiny-assed, ignorant public servant to make from his city desk:mad::mad::mad:

So, what can English Elm be used for?
What sort of cost does it sell for in Australia?

I despair sometimes over the narrow-mindedness of beaurocrats. Actually, I'll re-phrase that. I almost always despair over...etc, etc.
What a horrible waste of what is probably a very worthwhile lot of good timber. Elm is a lovely wood and some very fine furniture has been made from it.
