Brisbane Timber...
Hi,
I am located in Brisbane, and I am making a large dinner table from recycled joists (2500x1100x40 approx) for the top. so it is going to weigh about 150kg.
For the frame of the table If I could get away with it, I was wanting to just have the traditional four legs, and have them joined to each other.
Does anyone know of somewhere in Brisbane that I could get new(not recycled) timber that would be suitable for the legs and supports?? I was wanting thinking of some nice pine. That way I will have contrasting colours, and it will be a little easier to work with...
Any ideas???
Thanks
Greg.

I mostly bought secondhand timber when I was a Brisbanite, but did buy new from Moxons and Lazarides a few times. I'd recommend Moxon's first, much larger selection and they charge you on a cubic meter rate even for a few sticks.

Moxons was on the other side of the river, and Lazarides was near the airport (?eagle something or other?). Sorry I can't be more specific, It's been a few years since I lived in brizzy and I can't recall the names of the suburbs. Try the phone book.

From memory -Lazarides is at Yeronga and Moxons have recently moved from Hamilton to Banyo. As a newcomer to the hobby I am a little daunted at going to a timber yard in case I look like a dickhead so mostly buy pine from Bunnings or recycled timber from Underwood Demolition Market.

I think pacific wood products in slacks creek sell some good stuff for turning. Alernatively grays auctions at Archerfield. For second hand stuff Underwood Demo is prob the way to go, sort of seem to have that market tied up

There is also the Big red shed at darra way not far from garden way. Don't know what their prices are like but they do have a fairly extensive range. I was out there a about 8 months ago looking around so I can't remember their price lists.
Dave,
hug the tree before you start the chainsaw.

T'other way round!
Moxons: Yeronga 133 Hyde Rd 4104(07) 3848 7755
Lazarides: 15 Hurricane St Banyo 4014(07) 3267 3899
Haven't been to Moxons in a long while. The prices are ok, but you take pot luck on what you get if you're only after a few boards. And don't expect much help from the yard staff to find/identify what you're after!
Lazarides isn't cheap, but his stuff is good and he's very helpful at getting you just what you want. Experience has taught me that getting just what I wanted/needed is nearly always the cheapest way!
Cheers,IW

Try a timberyard/sawmill, I go to www.narangbatimbers.com.au for my timber, there are other mills around as well. You could try laminating/gluing some together to make your legs...

Narangba is cheap no doubt but theyre quality leaves alot to be desired. If you want something better from there you pay as much as anywhere else.
