Just came across your old 2011 post Chris. As I understand it now.... (2019)
D. ferrea now refers only to the tropical PNG and SE Asian species. I believe grows into a pretty big tree and is milled and sold as PNG Ebony.
One Australian Diospyros ("small leaf ebony" from 'dry scrubs' of Nthn Australia, Qld, NT and WA) was D ferrea var. humilis but I believe is now named D. humilis
Cheers, Eugene
