Dressing a Burl
Having done the regulation search
without finding what I was looking for, I now need some assistance in dressing a piece of burl. I have never worked with burl before and have just dressed it using the jointer/thicknesser. Whilst it has done a reasonable job, there is some tearout. The direction of feed makes no difference to the tearout. My question is, is there any particular technique to dressing burls, or do I just finish off with a hand plane/scraper?

Almost impossible to avoid some tearout of burls through thicknesser. Ideal method is thickness sanding. but those machines are on most peoples wish lists rather than their shop floor. I'd belt sand from here on in if I were you; hand planing and scraping unlikely to improve on thicknesser finish.
To reduce tear out on tricky grain I somethimes dampen the wood with a sponge before passing it through the thicknesser. Using newly sharpened blades, minimum speed (if adjustable), and taking minimum cut per pass (say 0.5mm) also helps.Rusty
