Default Guibourtia hymneaefolia = Caguairán from Cuba

    Hi Folks,

Quite a while back, I posted this thread on timbers from Cuba. Well, now that relations between Cuba and the US look to be changing in a big way, this topic seems more relevant. Does anyone on this forum know anyone in Cuba that deals with timbers? I am looking for some Guibourtia hymnaeifolia = Caguairán. IWCS samples would do.

    Runge,
You could try Tropical Exotic Hardwoods down at Carlsbad as he had a lot of unusual timber when I was there a year ago. I can't post a link, just Google it,

Thanks for the suggestion Crocy. You've travelled far if you've been to Tropical Exotic Hardwoods!! I've bought Libidibia sclerocarpa and Guaiacum coulteri from them.

With the trade embargo between the US and Cuba, there is virtually no Cuban timber in the US. Though, getting timber from Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica the Dominican Republic is not at all easy.

To get Caguairan, I think I will need to speak with a person living in Cuba. Incidentally, if anyone wants to familiarize themselves with the common and botanical names of Cuban plants, look through this. It's not comprehensive but it is useful. Here are some of their heavies:

Diospyros crassinervis (Krug & Urb.) Standl. = ebano carbonero (asabache, negrito)
Diospyros grisebachii (Hiern) Standl. = ebano real
    Brya ebenus DC.= granadillo
Krugiodendron ferreum Urb. = carey de costa
    Guaiacum officinale L. = guayacán

Here are more lists (Haiti is nearby).

Runge, it was Ticklingmedusa that put me on to them when we dropped in to see him about 3.5 years ago and I bought a few Cocobolo blanks then but it is a restricted import for us now. Found them to be a good bunch of guys to deal with and they had a good range of timber in stock that is not listed in their online store, so give them a call. Another guy to try is Isanbrand timbers in Torrance. I dropped into his shop last year and he had a fairly good range as well.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and all the Fourumites,
    Rgds,
    Crocy.
