Thread: Ebony?

Yes very likely tropical ebony which are often with a striped streaked heartwood. There are a few ebony (Diopyros species) with striped woods like these.
Ebonies are favourite timbers for carving because it takes detail and finishes so well.

edit: Pity to cut it up into pen blanks. Maybe refinish it, buy ebony from a wood supplier if you want it for pens.

It'd need a bit more than refinishing, it has been dropped and the trunk snapped off and there's a fair bit of damage to the other side. It's a bit of a mess really, and I'm not into carving. I figured I'd get a few blanks out of it and keep the rest of it for inlay work, which I know nothing about yet but would like to try my hand at. The item itself has no appeal to me at all I'm afraid.
