    Default Silky Oak Boards Price

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread but I was asked by our retired Newsagent about some timber he has under his house.

I think he wanted me to buy it so I went and had a look at the boards as a favour to him because he has sold his house and is moving in 2 weeks.

He has 2 boards.....40mm thick 280mm wide 2600mm long and they are arrow straight. I gave him an idea of value purely on a m3 basis of $4000 - $5000 per cube and came up with $120 - $150 per board based on their volume.

I know that there are other variables such as it would cost more if buying this small volume of 0.06 m3 but it was a start. I told him I personally would not pay that to him as I do not need that timber at the present and would not pay prime price just to do him a favour.

My question is how much would he realistically be able to get in the Woodworkers Market at present.

I'm really only responding as I'm curious to see how the discussion goes

but from my own point of view I am extremely unlikely to anywhere near pay top dollar for a couple of boards stored under someone's house

In Brisbane it is most likely a highset house, so could be a nice find, depending upon its cut, and figure. The 40mm thickness limits potential recovery so should be factored in. Could be three by 10mm boards for box makers and a real find if quarter sawn.

i got four pieces recently, 240mm x 40mm (between 2 and 2.4 metres long) very dry for $5.50 per lineal metre ... perhaps this was a real bargain but i don't think i would be wanting to pay anywhere near the price you suggested ... it had a few manky bits in it but i got plenty of stuff for smaller items (boxes, toys etc)

( i wouldn't be looking for something in brisbane either so i am not trying to talk him down)

    regards david

I think you've quoted him a reasonable price that someone who was looking for Silky Oak would pay. I have some and if I was going to sell it I would ask those kind of prices if I were selling small quantities.

Nonetheless, I would definitely call those dealer prices and not mates' rates.

    Mobyturns,

You are correct that they are stored under a high set house up in the beams of the floor above. Probably been there for 20 years........ Dry as can be and dead straight

If its been there over say 25 years it'll most likely be Northern Silky/ Carwellia sublimis. It would have been impossible to get a sale on Grevilla robusta pre mid 1990's because there were still significant volumes of Northern Silky on the market at that point, which made milling Southern Silky pointless.

$4-5k a cube would be a fair retail price for Northern Silky boards in that size if they were really good boards, it's getting hard to get wider quartersawn material in N. Silky now. I don't know G robusta pricing but I'd suggest probably 1/2 that would be fair.

Cut and condition will determine their worth, and of course the right buyer. On a per cube rate many of us have probably paid more than that for good quarter sawn boards.
