Effects of Radiation on Scot's Pine Near Chernobyl
This is what a few Scot's Pines look like after they've been cut down near Chernobyl. I'm being intentionally flippant here but can you spot when the nuclear plant disaster occurred?
From the paper, Tree rings reveal extent of exposure to ionising radiation in Scot's Pine (Pinus Sylvestris), mean growth rate was severely depressed following the nuclear accident in April 1986. There has also been a genetic impact upon the trees and some of the tree have shown abnormal growth forms as a result of mutations and cell death from radiation exposure.
If your interested you can read more from this BBC story: Chernobyl's legacy recorded in trees.

It would have nothing to do with the fact that the tree plantation was no longer being managed, no fertilizer, pesticides, undergrowth clearing etc.
That said, yes Chernobyl and now Fukushima are disgraces, old systems being run on a shoe string, Senior Management who couldn't give a rat's rectum....... Unfortunately nuclear power generation is necessary for a lot of places, it is a crutch not a permanent solution - there is even less accessible fissionable material than coal and oil.
The 'Carbon Tax' would be more honestly be a 'No S**t Sherlock, we really are running out of fuel' tax, but 'Global Warming' and 'Carbon Tax' are easier to sell to a public (and media) with the attention span of a gnat.
