Default Eucalyptus torquata - Coral Gum

    Hello woodies,

Recently I was looking through Timber in Australia in Colour, Timber in Australia in Colour when i came across this wonderful looking timber, call coral Gum (e. torquata).

I would really like to find out more about it, and perhaps source some too.

    Thanks

As far as I know this is a Western Australian species I know nothing of its commercial availability or properties.

    Perhaps BobL can help out.

i knowthat there was a crossbrd tree that was commonly promoted in the 70s - Torwood - a cross between E Torquarta and E. Woodwardii. The tree was straggly and didn't seem to have a long life but had beautiful and abundant flowers.

Coral Gums are WA natives used at street trees in WA towns and suburbs and small garden trees around Australia. If it gets enough rainfall it grows to 12 m tall but in its natural habitat it grows 6 - 8 m tall so the trunks don't get all that big while in low rainfall it can be stunted with twisted trunks. Occasionally you do a see a 3 m long straight trunk worth milling. I have my mate Jeff constantly on the lookout for a decent one but no luck yet.

Here are a couple of web links

    Thanks artme and BOBL,

I've seen lots of botanical stuff like the pages you linked. The only picture of the timber I've found is in the link I provided.

Naturally, my primary interest is it working properties. I'm interested in its mechanical properties.

    Cheers

The picture of that timber and the interlocking grain looks a lot like Tuart to me.
Sometimes I see it stacked on the sides of kerbs biannual at council chuck out times. I'll see if I can find some and slice it up.
