Hi Brett,
Probably the closest to you would be Brittons Timbers. They are in Dandenong, not far off the freeway. I have been able to get Birds Eye Maple and some nice Fiddle Back Blackwood from there. They will let you go through the pallets on some timbers , like the ones above, if you ask them. For other timbers, like Tassie Myrtle, Red Gum, Black Heart Sassafrass etc., you will have to take what they pull for you. Ring them and ask if they've got what you want and if they have ask if you pick it yourself. Best to give them a couple of days notice, so they can set a time aside for you.
Other than there, you could try Mathews Timber in Rooks Road Vermont. They have some nice Iron Bark and American Black Walnut at present. You can walk in off the street and pick from the racks yourself.
Lastly, try AFT, in Plummer Street Port Melbourne. You can select your own from there as well. You can browse what they have by looking at the pictures of the various timbers which they have as a page on the website. There are several others spread across Melbourne, but these three are probably the best.
Regards.

I'd like to know what I have to do to get stuff from brittons.
IVE BEEN 3 TIMES and they will NOT break a pack, they only want to sell packs, don't come back unless you want packs.
maybe I don't look right?
maybe I smell?
maybe I don't know the password.

_fly_,
I don't know what to say!! Maybe it's what you're asking for?
Try this..Call and ask if they have any Birds Eye Maple. If they say yes, ask if it's OK to select your own boards. They should come back with yes, when do you want come in a select them. They'll ask for 2 days in notice. Ah maybe this is where your going wrong. all first and arrange a time. Walking in off the street seems to be a No No for them. When you see the operation out the back, you'll understand.
As an alternative, tell me what you want to get, I'll call them (I have a COD account), arrange a time and you can meet me there at that time. Pick out what you want and pay for it. How does that sound?
Regards,
Rob

I've been in there to ask what timber they had for sale so I could work out something that I could make out of it.
Thats when they always told me they sold packs and they don't want to break packs.
But they also never told me what types of timber they had.
Maybe thats the trick, you need to ask for a particular timber before they will talk to you.
Thats a bit hard if you don't know what they have or in what sizes.

Yes it is _fly_, it is difficult. But I have to say that when I'm looking for odd timbers, I sometimes find that they have what I'm looking for. So I suggest you call them, rather than dropping in and ask whether they have any of the particular timber you want for a project. Once you establish that they have it then you will find that they will be happy to tell you what sizes are in the pack and how much a stick would be/lm. Sometimes they'll just say they're variable, but if you ask for a representative cost, say for 150 x 25mm, then you'll know where you are. I find it useful to talk to them like they know what's what and call them by name.(which they'll tell you when they answer the phone.) They really are good people to deal with, provided you follow the protocol I've suggested.
I hope this helps as they do have great timber.
Regards,
Rob

I have used AFT, Port Melbourne a couple times and found them excellent to deal with off the street. They will discuss the timbers they have, price it, collect and pay and go. No trouble whatever quantity you want and they have some nice imported timbers.
One timber species that I would love to get hold off is Camphor Laurel.....a slab or two. But can't seem to be able to source it in Melbourne. Can from NSW and Qld but not here. Anyone can point me in the right direction???
cheers

I had a good experience with Britton Timbers when I wanted some Tas Myrtle for the top of a coffee table.
I rang them and told them what I was after size wise which they said they had. I went down 2 days later and they had an extra piece pulled out for me to choose from so that I could be happy with the match of colour and grain.
Pretty much bears out what LGS has said.Tom
