Has anyone got any experience in this?
Cypress macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress).
I saw this in the Timber and Hardware section of the BB.
I am chasing a timber info sheet for it, so I can figure out its potential.
Can anyone help???
Cheers,
Clinton

Clinton,
I think there was a recent thread that mentioned this timber!?
I have used some in a recent carving class, and was surprisewd at how well it finishes. It seemed hard and a bit knotty like Aussie cypress, but far nicer to put a gouge into. Easy, slightly greasy and with a clean crisp edge. I thought it was real pleasure to work, but knots maybe difficult to plane.
No idea about applied finishes though...
Cheers,Andy Mac

Hi Clinton,
Welcome to the Board!
I don't have a link to a timber info sheet. However....
I've made a few pieces in Cypress. It's a lovely wood to work with, if I keep my patience working with it. Working on the end grain needs to be done carefully as it will split and splinter and carry on if this work is rushed.
Potential is what you'd like to do with it. Flooring, building trusses, wall linings, bookcases, tables, etc etc etc.
I've a few pictures on my home page of a stool, bookcases and picture frames in cypress. A few of us on the board have posted pictures of cypress work in the last few months.
I think the splitting is worth it as the end result is just beautiful.
cheers

Its promoted by NZ Foresty as a suitable replacement for Kauri.

Thanks Tim - thats why I'm asking
Ruffly - thanks, I have some form of cypress (Callitris?) in my shed drying, and its twisting away quite nicely - in a Salvadore Dali way. I am sure there are more "cypress" than I'd care to know about - I thinking this one won't move too much???? What did you make, and has it moved over time?
Andy and echidna - Thanks the website listed in Tims post ( http://www.goldencypress.com.au/) says its rated F7, and Class 2 durability. Some fiddle back grain. I am asking as no one that I know has used it. I am thinking of slotting some away in the rack. I might have to ask if I can get up and take a look. Marysville in winter, might have to fit the snow chains.... brrrr.
