Default External plywood - how weatherproof is it really?

    Hello,

I have what may be a silly question.... How weather proof is external ply?

I will be building a chook pen, using an old aviary as the frame. I've never used outdoor plywood before, and am thinking about using it for the walls. How weatherproof is it? I will paint it with external paint.

Do I need to give it a number of coats? Do I need to seal the sides and ends?

And finally, how long will it last?

    Many thanks.
    Nathan.

Sounds good nice fresh eggs daily and for all those cakes. Just watch cholesterol

Seal ends and sides use a resin Nathan and I reckon two maybe three coats.

External ply has a type "A" bond, which is the same as marine ply. The difference is the species that external ply is made from, are not as durable as the species selected for marine ply. The back tray of my ute was external ply and it lasted eight years. It would have lasted longer if I had kept the paint up to it. External ply will be fine for the chook house.
