    Default Words Of wisdom?

G'day all, I recently had a reminiscence session (read, I had to buy all the beer!) with an old timber cutter from up this way (Gladstone, coastal central Queensland).
The following are some gems of wisdom (?) I thought would be of interest to some, that emerged over the night.
PS, His father (long deceased) was also a timber cutter/saw miller in the same area, and some of these are quotes from the grave.

Never ever cut red cedar in summer, only ever cut "the pretty red" within one month either side of the winter solstice.

All the ironbarks should be ringbarked at least three months before felling.

If you are worried about white ants, use only ironbark and bloodwood that comes from the same area that you are building in.

Morton bay Ash is about the best general use and structural timber there is, but no good for fencing.

Always put fence posts in up side down.

Some fresh cut timbers can be made to look and smell like "the good stuff" by using a paint made from mainly sawdust, turps, metho and carbide.

None of the hardwoods from around here are any good for smoking fish or pig, use only coastal she oak, and never get any of its bark in the smoker.

Can't say I've ever heard most of 'em before, but they sound like something my Gramps would've said. And are probably all right.

The only one I know, and agree with is "Always put fence posts in up side down."

    Especially in wettish areas.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

How do you know if they are upside down unless you cut them yourselves?
    <Insert witty remark here>

Sprinkle with a bit of water and look for capillary action.

The fence posts I had in mind were the ol' farm posts... you know, tree trunks stuck in the ground which normally were cut on site. The same rule applies to modern domestic fencing, but I doubt anyone bothers with it in this modern age.

Not considering most of the new fences I've seen put up around here were steel

    Interesting post naumanmp.

Reckon you wouldn't want to be smoking while you painted on that timber 'makeover' mix!

I've heard that one before, but I haven't been able to get any kind of verification. I presume the rationale is something like: if it survived in the area, it must have some kind of innate unattatractiveness to the local vermin. It sounds too good to be true, to me.
    Cheers,
