How do I find figured timber in a Timber yard?
I am wondering how do people spot a highly figured plank in a timber yard. We all know that the timber comes from the sawmill and is rough sawn. To see the figured plank it have to be planned, but some people can spot it without this process.
Or are they just lucky, and it is a hit and miss affair?

Some figuring is subtle and doesn't manifest itself until the timber is worked, but usually, the figuring can be seen, even with rough-sawn timber, by viewing the boards obliquely. Wetting rough-sawn boards will often highlight less obvious figuring, but the proof is to plane small areas to see exactly what lies within. I always go to timber yards equipped with a small block plane.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

G'day Johan,
Timber yards are not the best place to find the sort of timber you are looking for. See if you can find small sawmillers - they often have a feast of stock and really are helpful to someone who has something in mind generally.Perhaps it is better to be irresponsible and right, than to be responsible and wrong.
