Found some illegally dumped timber - any idea what it is?
If these photos are to big, pls let me know. Newbie to the forum so not sure if they resize automagically. I host on google to reduce forum space.
Ok, so I was riding my trail bike out in the state forest the other day. Stumbled across a bunch of illegally dumped timber. Its clearly not timber felled in the area, as there is no cut down tress. Just a bunch of foot long slabs dumped in there. So I returned with the ute to pick some up. Its still very wet, and I am sure the council will have no issues with me removing stuff that has been dumped. There was 2 varieties. The couple of bits I have taken I have flat sawn with the chainsaw. IF its any good I might go grab some more. PRobably good for turning if anyone else is interested (it's at elimbah, state forest not pine plantation).

Interesting. Someone thought that retuning the tree to the forest might be a good idea.
I am not able to tell you what the timber is but I have seen it before.

A bit hard to say, but I have some English Ash that looks very similar to 2nd photo.

Looks like Jacaranda but I may be corrected. The top one looks similar bark to the Mango I have? but the grain doesn't

I throw my hat in, 1st Crows Ash, 2nd Jacaranda
How heavy are they? If the above is correct the 1st one should be heavier than 2ndNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Yup, species on is much heavier.
Sounding like number 2 is jacaranda, its getting a few votes.
IF anyone is interested in some, let me know. I plan to head out and pick up a few more pieces. Some is not so fresh and has the standard cracking down the middle. The couple of pieces I picked up are very green, but all of it is recently cut.

They could be a number of things, but Jacaranda seems a good bet for number two, number one could well be Crows Ash but also looks very like Foam Bark (Jagera pseudorhus).
...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

Does Crow's ash make good handles? (at least handle blanks are bigger than pen blanks )

Pearo, would it be possible to grab a couple of the suspected Crows Ash chunks please? I know someone in Brisbane who will probably be interested (waiting on an email reply).
Cheers

I'd say number one is more likely Celtis from it's bark.... A good pic of the cut surface (planed) could settle it - it has a very characteristic grain, reminiscent of the Elms (to which it's related).
Cheers,IW
