Default What is Rosewood like for timber flooring?

I have the chance to pick up some 600 x 85 x 12 T&G select grade Rosewood flooring for .50 cents per L/M. This is a good price I know. I have tried to get some quotes from retail outlets for comparison, but nobody seems to have it.

Has anybody used Rosewood timber for flooring? I have heard is about the hardness of Tassie Oak, so might get some dents & bumps after use.

What do termites think of it?

Since all the lengths are 600 mm, and having never laid flooring before nor having much to do with timber floors for that matter, I was wondering how it would go compared to longer & varied lengths. Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

I don't know Rosewood so can't comment as to its suitability.

I have seen a floor made from short lengths of timber, Blackbutt, and it was spoiled by the fact that the joins between the boards lined up, but not very well.

Depending on what you are fastening down to, you may be able to have random joins (the joins not forming lines in the direction across the boards).

Question for the forum: Can you finger joint floorboards end to end so that the joins can be between joists?

    Rob.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

    Yes. It's called end matching.

Michael, I can't tell you much about Rosewood. What are you laying it on? if it's on joists I think 12 mm might be a bit too flexible, however I don't really know so I might be mistaken.

12 mm thick if it's being placed over standard joist spacing walk gently don't jump.

Nah, I was not planning to use it on top of joists, but rather on top of an existing floor, most probably a concrete slab. I still have to look into what you need it terms of underlay - any comments?

Robert WA, I know what you are saying. I would never attempt to have all the end grains line up, that would look so stupid. I would stagger the joints randomly by starting the piece closest to the wall at different lengths.

    G'day.
Are your sure that it is Rosewood?

It sounds like Rose Gum (E. Grandis) to me...

If it is plain end (Square) you can direct stick it to Concrete with Bostik Ultraset Adhesive or Sika T55J Adhesive.
If it is end-matched, you can still do the same thing.
Checkout Boral website for overlay flooring installation procedures or Timber Queensland website for more info.

If they are 600mm long, yiou could lay them on a brick bond pattern or even lay them like large block parquetry.

    Hooroo.
    Regards, Trevor.

Mate if you can get rosewood at $0.50 per lineal meter grab all you can
What you don't use on flooring you will find a million uses for elseware

At 12mm thick perhaps these were for pannel boards that is wall boards
but whatever a good price for rosewood
Check out prices of pine lining boards 12mm thick and compare.

    Hi Michaelvass

The advice you have here is good. Regardless of the timber, 50c a linear is a steel. Worst case scenario you've got well priced firewood should Qld freeze over! As for the timber, I've sold New Guinea Rosewood, Tas Oak, Rose Gum etc etc as flooring. Generally no problems. Its all in the quality of drying, machining, site and materials preparation.

Bostik Ultraset SF or Bostik Ultraset Overlay is what we distribute and recommend as a glue for overlay floors (12mm is generally an overlay, its contrary to the cod to use it between standard joists!). The Solvent Free material is the one to go for - less OH&S concerns, no head aches etc.

Leveling the floor is important - failure to do so could void the glue manufacturer's warranty. Also macke sure your existing floor will accept the glue and produce a strong bond. You may need to rough sand your existing floor or may be even fix CD ply to it.

End matching is not relevant in your application. But you need to make sure you close the gap at the ends of the boards. A simple trick is to kick the board with the ball of your foot (sneekers on your feet) so that it presses firm against the board at the end of it. Use 300mm overlap for your joins with the 600mm boards. This will given you best stability row to row.

You can use nails if you want, but with a flat floor they are usually only there to hold things in place while the glue sets.

Make sure you moisture test the existing floor and the floor boards before laying as well as estalish the relative humidity. If they don't line up you'll need to equalise the boards - i.e. rack them out in the room and let their moisture content match that of the environment. Many will say this is unnecessary, but may a gap between boards or a bady cupped floor have resulted from those who didn't take this precaution.

If you need any detail on how to do all this try 1) Getting hold of the guidelines for inmstalling and finishbing timber floors (MBA should have this) and/or 2) get hold of Boral's guidelines for laying their overlay boards.

At the end of the day, congratulations on your bargain and I hope your install works a treat.

    Cheers

Do us a favour and check the date before posting your witicisms. It's bad enough when these old threads get dragged back up without having a bad Eddie McGuire impersonation to cope with as well.
