Thread: Free firewood options? (Sydney area)

How about you go for a drive in area's with Hard rubbish collection time . . .

I saw a stack at Seven Hills today nice logs

no idea other than Gum red pith flacky bark

oh and Pat we would have stopped and picked em up but it was phissing down

We don't have those anymore do we? At least not in the surrounding councils in Sydney where I live. I think they stopped having set days because people would just cause a mess on the footpath as they trolled through the rubbish. I also think council is making money off the scrap metal, plastics etc that is thrown away. These days you just ring up and they come and do a collection for free. No set days. I think it may be one free collection every 12 months or something...

In that case, check with your local council if its possible to have a pick through their green waste area. Many councils chip and compost this waste and sell it back to the locals. Dry logs are likely to be too hard to chip so they must do something with them.

Not a bad idea. I'll give them a ring tomorrow if I get some time.

The forestery dept grants permits to cut firewood in state forests. Used to be about $25 for 2 ute loads. I used to get the permit in Lithgow but they will have other offices. Google should find it.

I tried but all I could find was stuff like lithgow, dubbo etc. All a bit too far (and costly) for me to travel in any economical sense just for a trailer of firewood.

montiee, North Sydney has a green waste and a household waste collection on alternate weeks, in addition to the normal weekly garbage collection. As well as the lowest council rates in the state...

So does my area (though not sure about lowest council rates :lol: ). Trouble is green waste is 99.9% grass clippings . I work in North Sydney and I don't see too many logs (infact none ever) lying around on anyday as I drive through it and surrounding residential areas

Certainly all of UNS has 2 Hard Rubbish collections each year. Despite them specifying no garden stuff, there are always some stacks of timber out.

Also, prowling at the end of winter will always find heaps of logs on nature strip. They do not usually last too long tho' as folk with heaters seem to grab them pretty quick.

I have collected quite a bit of turning timber that way over the years.

Well rang the council. Like all government departments they no longer actually do anything or own any real services but subcontract out the services. Seems they get "mulch" delivered and that's about it. Advised me to ring around a few contractors to see what the deal is. It's probably the way I'll end up heading.

Hi montiee, just bear in mind that people will be doing their autumn winter pruning and general tidy up soon. Wothwhile to keep an eye out for suitable trimmings. I have collected useful pieces and lots over the years.
I now have my eye on a brushbox (?) tree which is scheduled to be felled by a council contractor shortly. The tree has a 50 to 60cm diameter trunk!!!
